Type 316 austenitic stainless steel (SS) is one of the candidate structural materials for Lead-bismuth alloy cooled reactors. One of key issues in the development of liquid LBE cooled reactors is the corrosion of structural materials such as stainless steel in LBE. In this study, the oxidation behavior two kinds of type 316 SS in LBE with saturated oxygen concentration were investigated in this study. In low carbon type 316 SS, the fast intergranular oxidations were observed over the whole surface after the corrosion test in LBE at 803K, however, the fast intergranular oxidation was not observed on 316 extra-high purity (EHP) SS. The stainless steel with high purity, like EHP alloys, seems to have high resistance to the fast intergranular oxidation in LBE.
